Films, especially cartoon animations, seem to return to the pre-literate world of Homer. What then are we to make of item #1, a picturebook which offers glimpses of narrative in comic book format derived from a film. There is a long history of the study of orality and literacy; in short, that each has good and bad features. We have gone beyond the Brothers Grimm, who were determined to make permanent, perfect written forms of oral stories to a more sophisticated appraisal. We are now confronted with graphic novels which really are an alternative form of interpreting oral material, so, we have orality, literacy, and, perhaps, graphicy (which we prefer to the term visuacy) . The French term, La Bande desinée, or bédé , (sequence of related images) covers various forms from the work of the Swiss Rudolph Töffler to Tintin (see item 582), and manga.

2. Anderson, M.T. The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing (Traitor to the Nation), Volume I. Cambridge, MA, MMVI, 1st, Candlewick. Cloth, 6½x9¼, 351p, DW. It only becomes apparent one quarter of the way through this book that the protagonist is an African slave. Both volumes of this superbly crafted novel are a surprising alternative history of the American revolution. For once, in fiction, the merely true does not have to yield to the plausible. America’s struggle for freedom becomes a cruel metaphor for Octavian. Just as the publication date (MMVI) harks back to books of long ago, the style is deliberately archaic.

Lewis Carroll was the first artist, in his photographs, to show children as they are, rather than as small adults. This sympathy for children is one of the things which makes the Alice books a success. It is a rare quality shared by William Mayne. One can’t know how widely Carroll exhibited his child photographs to artist friends and the like. However, within 20 years the representation of children in art through the work of Renoir, Cassatt, Manet, and Morrisot redefined childhood. Also from this time dolls changed from adult models to childlike ones. Alice is 7 years old and a convincing, if advanced, heroine. The books are considered literary nonsense, surely an experimental genre. They appeal on many levels and have numerous postmodern ideas, for example, The Long Tale.

Don Freeman (1908-1978) was an artist and superb draftsman of the Ashcan School of realism and was deeply involved with the theater in New York during the 1930s and 40s. He was introduced to children’s books by William Saroyan, another Californian. As Bader remarks, he was lucky to encounter William Coleman at Viking, who was a fan of Dynabase, (see above) a thin plastic medium with a slightly grained surface, which could be directly exposed to film, without the need for camera or halftone. (Similar to Plastocowell, which became the medium of choice for Keeping and Hale). In Freeman’s hands it renders his colored pencils with a luminous, almost tactile quality.

We now come to the most exciting part of the catalog . We have seldom encountered a better children’s book than the following. It came as a surprise since the author last wrote The Babysitters Club Series, which while popular, did not appear to deserve critical attention. However, Ann Martin & Laura Godwin have now created a postmodern masterpiece which is beneath the radar, (never having been reviewed by The Horn Book). The Doll family, 19th century era china dolls, have inhabited an antique Victorian dollhouse for over 100 years, when the quiet of their lives is shattered by a brand new family of plastic dolls, the Funcrafts. The books are hilarious for reading out loud to preschool, or older children, or to adults. They are packed with adventure, nostalgia, and energy. The pencil illustrations by Brian Selznick (see item 494) are integral to the books’ success in a way never achieved by another illustrator and comment on the text in droll and postmodern ways. For example, the endpapers are drawn in b&w as catalog pages, from something like Sears in the fep, showing the Doll family and their house, with a modern catalog page (WARNING: Choking Hazard, not for children under 3 years) for the Funcrafts in the rep.

The conglomerates who own the major publishers simply cannot understand how the business can be so unprofitable. At first the success of Harry Potter spawned a revival of magical fantasy, but, now publishers have taken the lesson to also include series of books which assure lucrative non-book spinoffs that are far more profitable than the books themselves. We see this with The Twlight series (Vampires), The Gossip Girls (Vamps, see item 551), and with The Fancy Nancy series, an American alternative to the British Fairy series (for about the same age,4-6). Fancy Nancy is all about Bling. It’s safe to say that no surface that could have a jewel or glitter goes without.

What is called a movie tie-in activity book with punch out card characters and some of the Steampunk Style machines which figure prominently in the film. The steampunk style is anti-modern. Steampunk rejects form follows function in favor of symbolic representation. Steampunk likes discrete components which have not lost their own identity in overall design. Brian Selznick (1966-) was educated in that hothouse of modern design and children’s book illustration, the Rhode Island School of Design, in the footsteps of Steven Kellogg, David Macaulay, and Chris VanAllsberg. He is one of the greatest American draftsmen we have encountered. His love for the theatrical makes him a fabulous storyteller and he has the rare gift of being able to take a
merely very good book and make it great, (see item 397). His Invention of
Hugo Cabret, is one of the most courageous and correct awards of a Caldecott
Medal since Where the Wild Things Are. Courageous since it forgoes color, it is
over 500 pages long, with 290 pictures and is more like a graphic novel than a
book. Selznick says that he originally wrote the entire story, without pictures.
He then went through deleting every bit of action from the story. What was left
became the text and he drew all of the action. The plot and style of the book are
based on American fantasies of Paris, old movies (his uncle used to make

MY HOBBY
When you spit from the twenty-sixth floor,
And it floats on the breeze to the ground,
Does it fall upon hats
Or on white Persian cats
Or on heads with a pitty-pat sound?
I used to think life was a bore,
But I don't feel that way anymore,
As I count up the hits,
As I smile as I sit,
As I spit from the twenty-sixth floor.

On the opening page of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival we see a series of images almost like small sepia photos. In fact, the binding echoes an old family photo album. We see first a paper origami bird, next a clock, next a man’s hat, eventually a child’s drawing of a family in which the man has an origami bird on his shoulder and a hat, so we can infer the existence of a man, whom we have not yet met. So in the postmodern book we need to be taught how to read again. On the next page there are hands wrapping and packing, in the final poignant frame two hands resting on each other, one a man’s, the other a woman’s. Father is leaving to travel to a new land. The home is poor in material comforts, but his entire prior existence is summed up by a shadow of a dragon’s tail on a wall, denoting some totalitarian state, as he walks away. This is graphicy and carefully constructed. The man travels to a strange new city where he is almost overwhelmed by how foreign everything seems. He cannot even read the notes pinned to the front of his coat by the immigration officials. The letters of the writing, in fact all the text in the book is written in this strange unfamiliar type. This is a great postmodern device, putting the viewer in the same frame as the hero; we can no more decipher this text than he can. We thus share his bewilderment. After some time he manages to get a job and put enough away to bring his little family over to the new world. And in the final sequence we see his young daughter after only a few months, stopping in the street to give directions to a newcomer. As young people always do, she adapts so much more quickly to the new. Tan is an Australian, and this book is a masterpiece. The Horn Book is to be commended on their Boston Globe Hornbook Award of a Special Citation for Excellence in Graphic Storytelling.

- Yorinks, Arthur/Egielski, Richard. Oh, Brother. NY, 1989, 1 , FSG. Cloth,9x12, c. 40p, DW. Evidently, the way this successful collaboration works is that the author sends the text to the illustrator, who then makes his own interpretation. For example, in this postmodern picturebook, the story opens before the beginning. There is no text describing just what sort of mystery the two heros get involved in, merely the words, It was a sorry accident at sea. However, the artist supplied the lack, in the opening frame we see the two brothers creeping down into a ship’s hold with a lantern. On the following page, we seen them fighting over some fireworks while the lantern has been placed aside. Observe how the lantern is tipping out of the picture frame. Facing this we see the title, which can be read as an idiom for “We are in trouble now”. And in the final frame, we see a two-page spread with the brothers running from danger. FINE $120

Cecily vonZiegesar (1970-) made a terrific splash with her chick-lit about fin de siècle adolescents with too much time and too much money. For publishers this is almost a perfect series, lacking only the dolls and other tie-ins. However, they have reappeared on television, and have their own website, www.gossipgirl.net,
(“You know you love me!”) where it seems there is a real person reporting these stories as actual gossip columns about perhaps real life people, a postmodern touch. Emails from the website appear as alternate chapters in the books. The stories are fast-paced and occasionally witty, and probably no one will mind that they only appear in paperback.
